What are the benefits of accelerated Orthodontics using Piezocision?

The outdated techniques involved in accelerated orthodontics used to require extensive surgery and direct exposure and traumatisation of the alveolar bone. In contrast, the latest method was developed by Prof. Dibart and his team in Boston, USA. uses an electric Piezo.

This device involves minimally invasive preselected fine vertical incisions made by the micro-vibrating cutting tip of electro-Piezo. The piezo-incised bone surrounding the moving teeth is stimulated and the activity in bone remodelling is accelerated via the demineralisation and remineralisation bone turn—over process adjacent to the bone site stimulation.

The procedure can be performed in one or more sessions dependent on the extent and complexity and the type of the tooth movement.

Each in-office Piezocision treatment session may involve a single tooth or a group of teeth, both upper and lower jaws,

Is accelerated orthodontics a suitable treatment for all patient categories?

Provided there are no local or systemic contra-indications to this minimal surgery, e.g., ankylosed teeth, bone disease, or patient non-compliance, this technique is ideal for most adolescents, and adults who plan to undertake fixed braces or removable clear aligners, e.g., Invisalign.

There is a good body of evidence-based research to support that accelerated orthodontics cause no adverse biological effects on the periodontium. It is a predictable surgical procedure as long as all the postoperative instructions and care are adhered to meticulously.

After consultation with Dr Nico Kamosi, you will be provided with adequate information on all the aspects of accelerated orthodontic treatments.

How long the procedure would take, and what would be the postoperative pain or discomfort?

The procedure is painless and takes between 45min and 60 minutes, depending on how many teeth need to be treated.

The post-treatment recovery time is generally very short except for mild soreness for a couple of days.

What are the treatment stages involved in the Piezocision?

  • Assessment by Orthodontist and preparation of an Orthodontic Treatment Plan.
  • Evaluation by a periodontist in preparation for the surgical phase, including any type of radiographs.
  • Piezocision carried out based on the envelope of orthodontic teeth movement
  • One week later, placement of Braces or Aligners
  • 2 weeks later healing review
  • A few weeks later, further review and possible adjustment of Orthodontic appliance

If you have always been concerned about crooked teeth causing aesthetic disturbances or biting and chewing discomfort. If you didn’t like the idea of wearing braces for many years, accelerated orthodontics using Piezocision could be a promising treatment option for you.
