What is the PROPEL technique?
Accelerated orthodontics utilising propelling technique or micro-ossteo-perforations (MOC) involves making small perforations in the vestibular alveolar bone to initiate micro-trauma.
How does the Propelling technique work?
- Following the application of steady, mild forces exerted by orthodontic appliances, gentle pressure on the teeth’ roots causes bone break at the root interphase. The loosening of the roots results from a bone resorption/apposition cycle called bone remodelling.
- It has been shown that such localised micro-trauma stimulates bone remodelling. The inflammatory process caused by these perforations accelerates bone remodelling and tooth movement into their ideal position.
- Based on the extent and type of teeth movement required, these micro-perforations are made at sequential stages during the initial stages of the orthodontic treatment.
- This innovative technology allows us to finish treatment in a more effective, efficient and predictable way.
What are the benefits of PROPEL Orthodontics?
- Reduced treatment time is required for patients requiring prolonged traditional orthodontic treatment due to complex teeth movement.
- Using the propelling technique enables patients to finish their treatment with even more improved results during a reduced timeline and fewer treatment appointments.
Why should I consider PROPEL Orthodontics?
- Allows you to change your Invisalign aligners every 5-7 days versus 14 days.
- Allows us to resolve the posterior crowding without needing teeth extraction.
- Enables dentists to utilize Invisalign to correct complex teeth movements, which is impossible when using Invisalign alone.
- Can be performed in-office in minutes with minimal discomfort to the patient.
- There is minimal downtime. Hence, our patients can return to their normal daily routine after a day!
- Stimulates the alveolar bone metabolic activity and bone remodelling, which fastens teeth alignment.
What are the contra-indications to PROPEL Orthodontics?
- Patients who have systematic diseases or are immune-compromised.
- Patients who consume NSAID or steroids.
- Patients with a history of bisphosphonate consumption.
Is the Propelling technique safe?
Propelling technique is minimally invasive and safe as long there is adequate space for bone perforation between the misaligned teeth’ roots.
Propelling technique is minimally invasive and safe as long there is adequate space for bone perforation between the misaligned teeth’ roots.
Propelling technique has been FDA-cleared as a Class II medical device for use in Orthodontics.
What is the aftercare for PROPEL Orthodontics?
There is minimal or no recovery time after a Propel procedure.
Please adhere to the following treatment aftercare:
- The slight oral sensitivity after the procedure will abate in a day or two.
- As the inflammatory response is necessary to speed up orthodontic treatment, it’s extremely important not to take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Aspirin or Ibuprofen.
- To reduce the oral bacteria, the use of hydrogen peroxide two or three times a day is recommended.
- To accelerate the healing, using Gingigel mouth containing hyaluronic acid two or three times a day is recommended.
