At London Specialist Dentists, we provide an environment of harmony, peace, and comfort for our patients. We strive to deliver the best treatment experience with minimal stress and anxiety. For those patients who are willing to undergo more complex treatment, or treatment that triggers anxiety and stress, we provide access to a specialist sedationist to perform conscious sedation in order to ensure patient safety, comfort, and overall experience.
How does dental sedation help our patients during their implant surgery?
By implementing dental sedation, the surgical procedure can be carried out in a calm, relaxed, and controlled manner. At London Specialist Dentist, we use sedation for procedures including implant placement, surgical approaches, removal of infected teeth, or augmentation and regenerative procedures. This sedation may reduce muscle tension, the patient’s stress and anxiety, and support the surgical approach to become smoother and more precise.
When is sedation recommended for dental implant surgery?
We recommend sedation for those patients who are anxious, are a bit sensitive, or have difficulty undertaking a complex implant procedure. This helps them to carry out the treatment safely, efficiently, and more comfortably.
Will I remember the surgical procedure during the sedation?
Conscious sedation is about creating a state of mind where communication with the patient is possible. While the patient may feel deep pressure during the course of, for example, implant placement, the patient remains in a semi-unconscious state. Most patients have very little awareness or remembrance of how the procedure went or how it was completed. This is reassuring for patients who are very nervous.
Does sedation support healing after the surgical procedure, or any procedure?
It seems that by calming the patient and reducing stress hormones through implementing sedation, we can create more hormonal homeostasis and physiological balance during surgery. Hence, lower stress hormone levels improve healing and recovery following procedures.
Is dental sedation suitable for phobic or nervous patients?
The answer is absolutely yes. Highly skilled dental sedation that we implement in our practice is the most effective solution for patients who are nervous or phobic. This helps patients stop being fearful so they can have treatment with confidence.
How does sedation help patients with severe dental anxiety?
Sedation will calm the patient’s mind and body and reduce the fight-or-flight response, which is mostly experienced by anxious patients before and during treatment. It allows the treatment to be more predictable and much less emotionally overwhelming.
Can dental sedation help anxious patients suffering from previous dental trauma?
The answer is yes. Sedation can break the vicious circle of anxiety and is beneficial for patients who have a history of trauma during previous dental treatment. It helps prevent triggering factors and supports patients in rebuilding trust over time.
Is sedation helpful for patients with TMJ disorders or jaw tension?
Yes. Sedation modifies the neuromuscular system, reduces muscle overactivity and unwanted jaw movement, and hence reduces jaw fatigue and muscle tenderness. It particularly helps patients during long procedures, whether implant or other surgical procedures, by reducing involuntary muscle tension and muscle hyperactivity.
Is conscious sedation safer for a patient when compared to general anaesthetic?
Preferably, relative anaesthesia or conscious sedation should be applied to avoid hospital admission, since conscious sedation allows for faster recovery, requires no hospital admission, and carries less risk while providing adequate physical and mental relaxation.
What type of sedation are we using here at London Association of Spine Therapists?
Advanced and sophisticated intravenous conscious sedation is an approach that allows for more precise relaxation control while keeping the patient conscious. It brings comfort and allows easy monitoring of the level of sedation during the course of surgery.
Will the patient be monitored during dental sedation?
Yes, of course. Blood pressure, oxygen levels, pulse, and breathing are continuously monitored by a highly specialised sedationist to ensure patient safety and comfort.
How long is the recovery from conscious sedation?
Recovery is normally quick. Within hours, patients start to feel back to safety and are accompanied home with a companion, following all aftercare instructions for the next 24 hours.
Why do London Specialist Dentists choose holistic dental sedation?
As we take the whole body into account and are specialist led, we choose a stress-free approach for our nervous patients to support them.
How do I book a sedation consultation?
The patient can request information about the dental sedation we provide. We then have a discussion with our specialist. Once agreed, we contact the sedationist and arrange an appointment. Your medical history will be assessed to determine suitability for sedation, after which a personalised sedation plan will be provided for your safety and comfort.
Please contact us if you have any further queries, and we will provide answers to all your questions with regard to oral conscious sedation.
